Although it may involve a lot of bureaucracy and persuasion to organise, this is a once in a lifetime holiday that you will never forget. Kish Island is located in the Persian Gulf and was included in the New York Times’ Most Beautiful Islands list in 2010 for reasons that will become immediately apparent. It is also a hugely popular place to visit for both Iranian nationals and foreigners as it has a remarkable mixture of old Persia and New Iran.
As home to the ancient ruins of Harireh, the island has history on its doorstep and the fascinating underground town of Cariz amazes thousands of visitors per year. Those seeking sunny beaches and beautiful water will not be disappointed either but as if this wasn’t enough, Kish is also one of the shopping capitals of the country with trade-free prices and numerous shopping malls making it significantly cheaper to buy goods here than elsewhere in the country. If you enjoy snorkelling it is believed that you can find some of the best in the world here as the waters are remarkably clear and are literally teeming with a variety of aquatic life.
