Cornwall

While there is plenty to do on the ground and also on the lakes, rivers and in the ocean around Cornwall it is up in the air for the event that makes Cornwall famous each year. The Cornwall Lift-Off is a festival that takes place in summer and is all about hot air balloons. Tourists can see the unique sight of dozens of hot air balloons floating overhead. The Cornwall Lift-Off also features concerts and other forms of entertainment on the ground. The St. Lawrence River is another spot to go to in Cornwall for activities or to just watch the water.

Cornwall Travel Secrets

Cornwall is a popular visitor destination and yet retains its unique and laid back charm with many hidden corners and surprises. Surrounded by coastline one of the main attractions in Cornwall are the beaches and thousands flock to places like Newquay for the surfing and sunbathing.

Secluded Beaches

Finding one of the beaches frequented by locals is one of the better ways to enjoy Cornwall and a relaxing way to spend a vacation. Many were used by smugglers in the eighteenth century and several are off the main road with a footpath down to the sea. There are often rock pools and sand or shingle shores, and these locally known beaches are frequently more peaceful than the main tourist resorts. Take Nanjizal Beach for example which is near Sennen in West Cornwall. Believed to be one of the finest beaches in Penwith it is accessed down a farm track and often deserted. The strange rock formations including Diamond Horse and the Song of the Sea add some atmosphere. Another secluded beach and reached from a steep footpath is Fishing Cove near Portreath which is a beautiful beach for a bathe, often with seals watching. Ask a local which beaches they use and you are likely to discover some of the most charming parts of the county. Locals will also warn you about currents and rip tides which are found along the coast in parts.

Genuine Cornish Pasties

A pasty is the traditional dish of Cornwall and is a meat and potato pastry creation that was originally designed for miners to take to work. The pastry crust was held by dirty hands so it would not contaminate the food, and a pasty often had meat and potato in one section and apple in the other as a dessert. A real Cornish pasty has beef steak or skirt in it, potato, turnip, and possibly local herbs. If you plan to try the pasty be wary of cheap supermarket and takeaway versions as they have been known to use inferior produce. Ask a local where they would buy a pasty or visit the well known sellers in Hayle and the Lizard. Most Cornish women have been taught to make a pasty by their mother so if the opportunity arises to taste the home made variety take up the offer and you will rarely be disappointed.
