To learn about the first European settlement in Ontario, which occurred in 1638, visit Midland and the Sainte-Marie among the Hurons historic site. The living museum has reconstructed the French Jesuit Mission with its Chapel, vegetable garden, Christian longhouse, shoemaker shop and houses. Every day at Sainte-Marie among the Hurons there are demonstrations to show what life was like in the seventeenth century. These include cooking, story telling, a historic clothing presentation and a demonstration of medicine. Visitors to Midland can also see the Martyrs’ Shrine Roman Catholic church and Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre.
