While a visit to St. Catharines will include shopping, eating and viewing historic sites it also provides visitors with the unique experience of watching the large ships navigate the locks and the Welland Canal. The Welland Canal allows ships to move between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Three of the eight locks of the Welland Canal are located close to St. Catharines. There you can watch as the water level goes up or down, taking around ten minutes to change and then the gates of the lock open and the ship then departs.
