Catalina Island

A popular island for visitors from California who want to enjoy a break from the heady rush of the city, Catalina has a fine history of weekend trips and holiday homes. The most common method of arriving here is on a sail boat from Marina del Rey or Long Beach and when you arrive in the wonderful harbour of Avalon you will fall in love. With plush hotels aplenty on Catalina Island the only thing that you need to worry about is how far your budget can stretch. There are numerous spa-resorts and cheaper guesthouses in the Avalon area.

Catalina is hugely popular for scuba diving and the waters are wonderful for exploring; expect to see rays, sharks, octopi and lobsters. If you fancy going under the sea but not getting so close to the sea creatures then the island has a small submarine which tours regularly. The Casino is an old fashioned ballroom and gathering place which has remarkable charm and is completely unmissable due to its location on the seafront. It is also a cinema and a visit here will be guaranteed to be memorable.
