The city known as the “Mile High City”, Denver, Colorado is the gateway to the West. This city celebrates the great outdoors with a colossal selection of activities available no matter what time of year it is. Visitors have the occasion to ski on some of the best slopes in the United States during the winter months. During the warmer part of the year, there are plenty of parks and mountain ranges to explore while hiking or, for the true daredevils, white-water rafting is categorically a popular daytrip, which is sure to afford a very unforgettable vacation experience.
1. Denver is known as the Mile High City because the 13th step of the State Capitol is exactly one mile above sea level. Enjoy magnificent views from the State Capitol building, which is a replica of the Capitol in Washington DC. Guided 45 minute tours are offered daily.
2. 16th Street in the city centre is a pedestrian mall, with trees, flowers and benches bordering a shopping precinct with souvenir stalls and restaurants. There are also many outdoor stalls run by Latinos, which adds a lively note. A free shuttle bus runs the length of the street.
3. The southern end of 16th Street is where you can see the city’s skyscraper district. Denver is famous for its Modern and Post-Modern architecture, great examples of which are the Republic Plaza, United Bank Center, the Republic Plaza, the Amoco Building and the Denver Post Tower.
4. The Larimer Square historic district is where Buffalo Bill once lived. This trendy section of the city has beautifully restored Civil War and Victorian period buildings and gas lamps which light up at night. There are also restaurants and gift shops, as well as some art galleries and nightclubs.
5. The enormous Denver Art Museum comprises two buildings, one constructed like a fortress and the other sleek and modern, designed by world renowned architect Daniel Libeskind. The museum houses an eclectic collection of artifacts, the most notable being Indian art.
6. The Museo De Las Americas showcases objects from Latin America. Over 4,000 cultural and historical exhibits, from antiquity to the present, are on display. This museum focuses on highlighting the heritage of the large Latino population of the city.
7. The US Mint in Denver is one of three facilities which produce the currency of the United States. There is a small but interesting museum on site which documents the history of coin production. Some the country’s gold reserves are stored at this site.
8. For sports lovers, a visit to Coors Field is a must. This huge baseball stadium, which is home to the Colorado Rockies, has a seating capacity of over 50,000. Tours are conducted every day, except when a game is scheduled.
9. The Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre has amazing natural acoustics. This natural phenomenon is at least 250 million years old and many concerts and shows are performed there. This park also has spectacular trails for walking and hiking; and entrance is free.
10. Right in the middle of the city is the 23 acre Denver Botanical Garden, where one can spend hours wandering through 45 magnificent separate gardens, such as the Rock Alpine Garden, the Japanese Garden and the Mordecai Children’s Garden. This is a wonderful spot to relax in and get away from the hype of the city.
