  1. Stunning but Expensive Summer Location 4 out of 5

I visited Vail during the summer on the way to Denver. Although known as a winter playground, I was surprised to see that the resort town allows summer visitors to use the ski lifts to travel up the mountain and then return to the base. The Rocky Mountains create a spectacular backdrop to the ride. Prices at the base of the mountain were expensive but otherwise it was a great place to stop.
