Dry Tortugas National Park

The Dry Tortugas, named because there is no freshwater present, are located near to the Florida coastline and are a hugely popular tourist attraction due to the beauty of the area and its fascinating history. Fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise may recognise the name, the area used to be a favoured haunt for brigands and there are many stories about sunken treasure ships. The threat of piracy was one of the reasons that the colossal Fort Jefferson was built.

Although only available to visit as part of a day trip or to stay over on a yacht, the islands are a wonderful place to visit for a few hours as they offer a wonderful range of activities for all the family. Snorkelling and diving are the most popular activities because of the remarkable coral reefs in the region. Fort Jefferson is an astonishing place to visit, it is the largest brick construction in the Western Hemisphere and has been mostly abandoned since the end of the American Civil War. Although it has also infrequently been used as a prison and was designed to house over 400 guns.
