If you are looking for a more peaceful and less touristy Hawaiian island then Kauai may be exactly what you are looking for. Quietly populated and home to fantastic surfing, Kauai has become something of a second-home to water-sports enthusiasts of all kinds. Famous for its wonderful diving and waves, the beaches are also stunningly beautiful and perfect for lazing around on a hot day. If you don’t wish to brave the currents of the sea, there are a number of inland rivers which make for wonderful kayaking, something that you don’t see very often in Hawaii. For those who enjoy an off-road activity, the island is filled with trekking, mountain biking and jeep trails to suit all skill levels.
The island has two distinct weather regions: the wetter, more lush north and the sunny, beach coves of the south. It is best to plan accommodation in advance depending on which climate you would prefer. Due to remarkable beauty and lush valleys of the island it has been used as a location in a number of films, most recently Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which used the island as a base for some scenes.
