This peaceful little island in North Carolina is a favourite holiday spot for tourists during the summer months as it offers glorious sunshine and one of the best beaches in America, Ocracoke Beach. The island has a wealth of history as well as being beautiful. It was once a favourite refuge for pirates and was home to the most famous of all, Blackbeard, before he was killed in a naval battle in the waters not far from the island. There is also a wonderful Ocracoke Preservation Museum where you can sample life from days gone by in a traditional house, which has many artefacts from the civil war era and after.
As the island can get very busy it is recommended to book accommodation in advance as there are only a limited number of rooms. The rooms are lovely, however, and well worth the expense of staying in a century’s old traditional home. Ocracoke Island is famous for its watersports and it attracts many a seasoned deep-sea fisherman and windsurfer but it is possible to take part in the fun regardless of your level of expertise.
