South Padre Island

Although hugely popular with students during ‘Spring Break’, South Padre Island is essentially a calm and peaceful place to spend a holiday filled with beach walks and bird watching. It has recently begun to bill itself as an ecotourism haven and many nature-loving holidaymakers come here to camp on the beautiful grounds and visit the numerous wildlife refuges that are located in the surrounding area. For those seeking more exotic animals, the Gladys Porter Zoo was one of the first in North America to feature cage-less displays and there is over 1800 animals to see here.

South Padre Island has become home to a thriving ‘Spring Break’ scene and the locality is invaded every March by fun-loving, adventure-seeking college students who come here for the beautiful beaches and amazing watersports, including windsurfing and deep-sea fishing. Most people that come to the island tend to stay in one of the many campsites or private apartments that are around the island as it allows them a little space in an otherwise bustling place. It is also hugely popular with retirees during the winter months thanks to the glorious year-round weather.
