An ideal get away winter vacation is to escape from the bustle of other busy mountains to the un-crowded slopes of Alta. It is in the majestic Wasatch Mountains, south east of Salt Lake City.

Alta offers great off-piste skiing, some of the best powder in the United States and terrific views from many of the 116 runs as you ski down to base. As snowboarding is not allowed, this family friendly resort is dedicated to skiers to enjoy the freedom of the wide open spaces and deep powder.

Over a quarter of Alta’s 2,200 acres is devoted to beginners and 40% to intermediates. There are also plenty of trails and terrific off-piste options for advanced skiers seeking more thrills.

Alta also has some gorgeous deep powder bowls, so put your skis over your shoulders and hike away from others on the marked trails for some really quiet un-crowded spaces.

Backcountry tours are also available.

Alta is a cozy comfortable village with a range of cafes and restaurants and excellent accommodation. It’s quieter here than most resorts.

Terrain: 25% beginner, 40% intermediate, 35% advanced. There are 116 named trails. The longest run is 3 miles or 5 kilometers.
