Surrounded by the altiplano, La Paz sits in a valley at the elevation of 10,000 to 13,000 ft. The city sprawls outward covering the remainder of the canyon as the city swells. La Paz is the home to the famous “death road” where the dangerous narrow mountain roads peak over the mountain cliffs. With many historical sites, museums and great natural surroundings, La Paz is becoming increasingly popular for tourists. The extremely low cost of living makes the city a playground for westerners with a stronger currency and the backpacker crowd shows up here in droves every year.
