Arica is the northernmost coastal city in Chile and situated just south of the Peruvian border. The city brands itself as the driest city in the world, seeing nearly no precipitation throughout the year and yet is located right on the Pacific Ocean where the desert meets the sea. For many travelers it is a stopover in route to other coastal cities in Chile or Peru, however the city is well known for its big waves, making it a draw for surfers from around the world. Once a part of Peru, Arica became a Chilean city after the War of the Pacific in 1929, while the nearby city of Tacna remained Peruvian.
