El Gran Roque

As the only populated island in the Los Roques National Park, El Gran Roque is the most suited to visiting which is a good thing as it is also one of the most beautiful islands in the region. Tranquillity is the key word for the main village in Gran Roque and upon your first sight of a shoeless villager walking along the sandy streets, you will feel any tension ease from your body. The colourful houses and remarkably friendly locals add character to a wonderful town where seafood features high on the menu and mojitos are the order of the day in the sprinkling of beachfront bars.

Visitors come here for the beautiful beaches with incredibly clear water surrounding them, so expect to see lots of people snorkelling and once you see the unbelievable clarity of the water, expect to join them. There is a wonderful Turtle Sanctuary on the coast where it is possible to swim with the little creatures for a small fee, a highlight for many a traveller of there time here. There are a few small posadas in the village which are the most authentic, and cheapest, way to stay on this beautiful island.
