Walnut Tree Inn, Northampton Review

Our Rating : 3 out of 5

The Walnut Tree Inn is just outside the village of Blisworth between Northampton and Towcester, in England. We were surprised just how busy it was given that the location, near junction 15a of the M1, makes it a good overnight hotel. A car is needed to stay here, but parking is plentiful.

Built in 1850, the Walnut Tree Inn was originally an hotel for overnight rail travellers. The main London line is opposite the hotel but, sadly, today there is no station.

Being an old pub each room is different. The room we had was very comfortable and well fitted out with modern furnishings, fixtures and equipment. All rooms have a television and most welcome was the complimentary, high-speed broadband wi-fi that worked well. Free coffee and tea is in each room.

One of the treats of staying in an English inn is the bar. The one at the Walnut Tree Inn does not disappoint with leather, padded chairs, comfortable sofas, an open fireplace for use in the colder months and an excellent choice of draft beers and ciders. Amongst others, two local beers, Phipps IPA and Wagtail, are available. A fine choice of bar meals, which are well prepared, are available and served with efficiency. There is a very respectable wine list, with a dozen available by the glass. Lastly, the Walnut Tree Inn prides itself on its selection of whiskies and even has a separate ‘Whisky Menu’.

As an alternative to bar meals, there is the more formal restaurant with a great choice of dishes, with traditional British fare being combined with international influences. Food is available seven days a week and as much as possible is sourced locally. If you are around on a weekend, the Sunday lunch is a fixture and popular with locals.

In addition to the bar and restaurant, there is a heated patio area, for the convenience of smokers.

On most Thursday evenings, there are folk, blues or acoustic music and, on Saturday nights, there is live music in the bar. If you want an early night do ask for room that is not close to the bar, as the music will keep you awake. A number of other social events are also held at here including jazz artists, comedians, magicians and various singers.

The Walnut Tree Inn has a conference room that can take up to 85 delegates. It was once a ballroom and a popular dance venue. They also cater for weddings, funeral receptions and private parties. It is also well situated for attending the Formula 1 racing at Silverstone, the Towcester horse racing or Saints rugby union matches.

Overall we found the Walnut Tree Inn to be a very comfortable local inn at which to stay. The bar and food meant that there was no need to leave and the prices were good value.
