By rail! Swiss Railways are excellent and connect all the main cities and it does work like clockwork. Trains are on time, they are comfortable the staff are pleasant. Why are not all railway systems like this.

You do not need to book on the trains and just buy a ticket and travel. For value if you are visiting for a few days or longer buy a Swiss Railways Pass as a lot cheaper that way than to keep buying single tickets.

A few trains need a booking and includes the Glacier Express.

In many cities the public transport is free to visitors and your hotel will give you a free pass for all the time you are booked into the hotel.
